  1. I will be in Birch Bay this Sunday across from the C shop. Patrick Alesse hosts the farmers market. I will be drawing and trying to sell some of my pieces. Thank you.

  2. To Whom This May Concern,

My name is Laura Taylor. I am a theatre artist, and am currently finishing up my theatre degree at Trinity Western University in Langley, BC. I am intrigued by many venues of art and exploring my creativity in drawing, movement, writing, acting and improvising. I was wondering if you were hiring any positions this fall season?

Look forward to hearing from you.

    From,

    Laura E. Taylor

    Hi Laura,
This venue is completely non profit. It is merely a networking resource for local artists and folks looking for local art.
I don’t get paid and I really can’t employ anyone, but you are more than welcome to visit us when you visit Bellingham!

  5. WWU offers unique tapestry conservation course spring quarter 2012
    Conservation Workshop – Art 397H (2 credits)
Join us for a unique opportunity to work with a well-known textile conservator on a rare collection of university-owned tapestries.

This special workshop, led by experienced textile conservator Geoffrey I. Brown, focuses on conservation of a unique set of 13 tapestries designed by the famous American sculptor Alexander Calder. Participants will get introduced to the world of textile conservation and receive hands-on experience applying specific treatments required for the Calder tapestries. Work will require use of equipment such as steamers, power staplers and include moderate lifting operations. Two class sessions will take place; each group of 5-6 students will work simultaneously on the tapestries. Classes begin March 27.

Due to the high quality control necessary for this project, acceptance into the workshop is by consent of the instructor. If you are interested in being considered, please notify Geoffrey I. Brown by emailing calderproject@gmail.com. General questions can also be directed to Extended Education by calling (360) 650-3308.

  6. On Friday, June 1st, watercolor artist Candace N Buethorn will host an open house at her Studio/Gallery space in Bay Street Village during Bellingham’s Downtown Gallery Walk. The celebration is a culmination of her fifteenth year in business and six months in her new downtown location. Displayed will be her plein air landscapes, watercolor portraits, mixed media collages, and these works also available as prints, cards, journals and other merchandise. In addition, Buethorn will feature her latest mixed-media collage from recycled materials, “Dawn of the Hot-N-Ready”. Visitors are welcome to stop by 301 W. Holly Street, #M5, between the hours of 5-9pm. Light refreshments will be served and the artist will be on hand to sign her work and chat with visitors. More info: 360-778-3941, http://www.candacebuethorn.com.

Buethorn, well known in the Northwest for her plein air watercolors and annual calendar, was also the featured cover artist on the 2011/2012 Whatcom Food and Farm Finder. Over the past few years she has explored mixed media techniques that have created stunningly detailed collage pieces that invite viewers in for a deeper look. Continuing in this vein, her new work “Dawn of the Hot-N-Ready” was meticulously assembled from pizza box lids and other recycled scrap paper, set against a misty watercolor landscape. It features an American Bald Eagle in the foreground made up entirely of tiny snippets of those recycled materials. “Why would I choose trash to depict this icon of America”, asks Buethorn? The artist may not answer her own question, but she enjoys the conversations that come from viewers’ reactions to the piece. She also shares that the colors she chose, the totem-ic palette, were intentional. These layered pictures, stories, and meanings are a delightful part of Buethorn’s work. They add a rich sense of depth for her audience to ponder, and the “Dawn of the Hot-N-Ready” contains a wonderful blend of symbolism, mixed with a touch of the artist’s wry sense of humor. All this presents a piece that will be hard for the viewer to walk away from at her open house.
